Scientific Name: Lecythys tyurana

Other Common and Commercial Names: Coco mono, Coco cristal (Colombia), Coco de mono, Olla de mono (Venezuela), Monkey Pot (Guyana), Kwattapatoe (Surinam), Castanha sapucaia, Sapucaia vermelha (Brazil), Machin-mango (Peru).

Appearance: The outer layers (sapwood) are yellowish cream (2.5Y 8/6) and the inner layers (heartwood) are light to dark salmon color (5YR 5/6) with slightly conspicuous vascular lines.

Working Properties: It is somewhat difficult to work due to its high density, but it offers good to excellent finishes for brushing and drilling. It is classified as easy to moderately difficult to dry and presents low to moderate risks of deformations and cracks. There is no information available about artificial drying programs. It is classified as highly resistant to attack by fungi and insects and moderately resistant to marine drillers.

Uses: Wood is used for heavy construction, boat keels and sleeves, railway sleepers, industrial floors, uses that require high impact strength (float wheels, tool handles) and turnery.
